Myths have always shrouded hypnosis and its therapeutic offshoot, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the reality behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have a crucial role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They believe that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to resist the impact of the practitioner. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Hypnosis can be exercised on anyone irrespective of his or her mental strength.
That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been doing the rounds. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the external world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. That person is just in a calm state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.
Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have used the identical hypnosis technique on all people without considering their individual traits. One hypnosis technique for all is not a workable solution as different people come under different character types, and therefore respond to different methods.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, communication between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like an engagement with the self without any external interaction involved. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. The person doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is not possible without communication.
It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause transformations in physique or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a good amount of of inspiration in an individual.
Undergoing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and thus one should not pay attention to the myths, and go for hypnotic sessions with an unbiased mind.
